Coyotes cause significant amounts of damage in California. They are most noted for killing pets, such as dogs and cats, but are also well known for killing poultry and livestock. Coyotes also dig up irrigation lines, destroy crops and sometimes pose a threat to human safety.

Coyotes are found throughout the United States, and California is no different. Coyotes are prominent all throughout the Sacramento area. They are not only in rural areas, but they are often found in urban areas that are near streams and rivers. Many neighborhoods have reported sightings, pet killings, and daily activity.

The coyote is a small to medium size canine. It has a slender body, pointed ears and a bushy tail. The coyote is brownish and gray with a light cream to white colored belly.

A typical adult male weighs from 25 to 40 pounds and females weigh between 20 to 30 pounds. Urban and metropolitan coyotes weigh a little less.

In rural areas, coyotes feed on all sorts of wildlife such as mice, rats, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, porcupines, feral cats, ducks, geese and grouse just to name a few. They also feed on apples, cherries, plumbs, melons and black berries. In urban areas they feed on just about the same thing.

In the urban areas, 2% of a coyote’s diet consists of mice and rats, and 1/3rd of their diet is house cats and small dogs. Fruit of all varieties is also part of their diet.

Warning Signs

As coyotes increase in the city, they get accustomed to people–especially if people do not scare them away. Studies have revealed a predictable pattern of changes in coyote behavior. This progression is sped up when coyotes are provided a lot of food. When you see pets being attacked and coyotes being seen throughout the early mornings and late afternoons, it is time for corrective procedures to prevent the escalation of attacks on humans.

• Increase in coyotes on streets and in yards at night
• Increase in coyotes approaching adults and/or taking pets at night
• Coyotes on streets, and in parks and yards, in early morning/late afternoon
• Coyotes chasing or taking pets in daytime
• Coyotes attacking and taking pets on leash or near owners; chasing joggers, bicyclists, other adults
• Coyotes seen in and around children’s play areas, school grounds, and parks in midday
• Coyotes acting aggressively toward adults in midday

What to do if you have coyote problems:

• If you see a coyote on your property, remove all “attractants” to deter the coyote from returning.
• Remove garbage and pet food before nightfall and cleaning up around the grill.
• Keep small pets inside.
• Keep small dogs or cats inside–especially at night when coyotes are most active.
• If you encounter one, clap your hands and shout loudly to scare it away.
